Technical Services

The Technical Services Department provides cataloging services, Interlibrary Loan services, training to member library staff, and more.

Cataloging

Descriptive cataloging involves applying a standardized set of rules, currently RDA (Resource Description and Access), to record the title, author, and publication data for a work.  RDA also entails describing the physical extent of the work, adding bibliographic notes as necessary, and adding access points for persons or entities associated with the creation of the work.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan is a service whereby a patron of one library can borrow books, DVDs, music, etc. that are owned by another library. If none of our 65 member libraries own the item, a search is done through DueNorth, and OCLC to fill the requests.  The Empire Library Delivery and NCLS Delivery then get the item from library A (owning library) to library B (patron’s pickup library). Learn more in our ILL Guide.

Staff Training

Technical Services staff provides one-on-one WorkFlows training for new directors and their staff.  Training includes all the components of WorkFlows such as Circulation, Patron Registration, Barcoding, and Reports.  In addition to WorkFlows training, is  DueNorth Interlibrary Loan training.  If you are a new director or have new staff, please contact the Technical Services department for training.
