In order to provide internet access (a core service), a library needs:
Hardware: You'll want to make sure that both your public and staff PCs are up to date. Warranties on new computers typically cover three years; NCLS will continue software support after the warranty expires, but if there is a hardware problem, you'll need to buy a new machine. You can find our current pricing guide below.
Internet Service Provider: This is usually Spectrum or FirstLight, depending on the library. If you're not sure, check with the NCLS IT Department.
Router and wireless access points: Your library will already have these; they are maintained by NCLS. There is an annual cost that is subsidized by E-rate, a Federal program that supports connectivity.
Speaking of E-rate, if your library takes advantage of this discount program, you'll need to make sure your policies for internet access are CIPA (Children's Internet Protection Act) compliant. You can find sample policies in the box to your right.
Many North Country libraries receive federal funding through the E-Rate program, which requires compliance with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA).
