Directors Do It All: Staff & Volunteers

Hiring Staff

As the director, you're responsible for hiring all other library staff, but you'll need to work with your board to create positions, set salaries, and get an official vote of approval for all appointments.

You'll also want to consider:

  • Reaching out to your civil service board, if applicable
  • Conducting a background check
  • Probationary periods and evaluations

Where to Advertise

NCLS will be happy to post your ad to our website and within the NYS library community.

Just fill out our Job Posting Submission Form, and we'll make sure the library community knows you're hiring.

It's also a good idea to post it to your library website, your social media accounts, and local media outlets.

NYS Pay Transparency Act

As of September 17, 2023, New York State businesses with four or more employees are required to list compensation ranges for designated job opportunities, promotions, and transfers. These ranges consist of the minimum and maximum annual salary or hourly compensation believed to be accurate at the time of posting. Read more on the Department of Labor website.

Even though the law does not apply to our libraries with staff under four people, NCLS recommends all libraries comply as a best practice.
